What is yield strength and tensile strength?

When many customers understand our tensile testing machine, they will ask whether our products tensile testing machine can do the yield strength test.

Shijiazhuang Zhongshi testing machine CO., LTD can definitely tell everyone, of course, as long as the tensile testing machine is used. Can do all kinds of tests of pulling and pressing and bending. The two strengths of yield strength and tensile strength, as determined by the tensile test, are for the tensile force. Let's talk about what is the yield strength and tensile strength so that everyone can separate.

Yield strength

What is the yield strength? The yield strength is only for elastic materials, and the inelastic material has no yield strength. For example, all kinds of metal materials, plastics, rubber, etc., are elastic and have yield strength. Glass, ceramics, masonry, etc., generally have no elasticity. Even if such materials are elastic, they are minimal, so there is no yield strength.

Yield strength refers to the maximum stress that a material can withstand when yielding. When the stress exceeds the elastic limit, the deformation increases rapidly. In addition to elastic deformation, partial plastic deformation occurs. Some steels (such as high carbon steel) have no obvious yielding phenomenon, and the stress at which a slight plastic deformation (0.2%) is usually used as the yield strength of the steel is called the conditional yield strength. This is the critical value of the two deformations. The strength of the point is the yield strength of the material! The tension value of this critical point is called the yield point corresponding to the applied tensile force.

2. Tensile strength

When the steel yields to a certain extent, its resistance to deformation is re-increased due to the rearrangement of internal grains. At this time, although the deformation develops rapidly, it can only increase with the increase of stress until the stress reaches a maximum. Thereafter, the ability of the steel to resist deformation is significantly reduced, and large plastic deformation occurs at the weakest point. Here, the cross section of the test piece is rapidly reduced, and the necking phenomenon occurs until the fracture is broken. The maximum stress value (corresponding value of point b) before the steel is subjected to tensile fracture is called the strength limit or tensile strength.
